Extermination

The streets were eerily quiet as Paula drove home. But on her block, exterminator vans dotted the street; workers were busy on every roof. A man in a blue uniform removed a ladder from her house as she parked.

“I hope you don’t mind, ma’am. The city asked us to investigate a dangerous toxin that seems to originate with these wasps.” He showed her a small (but empty) nest.

Paula didn’t believe him. She walked into the house to call the city, but was overcome by fumes pouring in from the roof.

The vans moved on to the next neighborhood….

  1. Oooh, nice twist to the prompt. Too bad she didn’t have a mobile phone to call from instead of going into the house. But then, that doesn’t necessarily mean she’s dead though, now does it. This is a good start to a nice SF novel 🙂
